Daily Prompt 35

Do you remember your favorite book from childhood?

When I think back on my childhood, The Very Hungry Caterpillar stands out as more than just a favorite book—it feels like one of my earliest experiences with wonder. I remember being drawn to the rhythm of it, the simple but satisfying progression of days, and the way something so small could grow and change so completely. At the time, I probably loved it for the colors, the repetition, and the playful idea of a caterpillar eating everything in sight. But looking back now, it feels deeper than that.

That story quietly introduced me to the idea that change is natural, even beautiful. The caterpillar’s journey—from constant hunger to transformation—mirrors how we all grow, often without realizing it in the moment. As a child, I saw it as a fun adventure. Now, I see it as one of the first stories that taught me patience, growth, and the idea that something greater can come from simple beginnings.

In a way, it makes sense that it was my favorite. Even then, I was connecting to the idea of becoming—of turning into something more than what I was, one small step at a time.

  1. I read ALL the time as a kid; I don’t know that I remember having one favorite book as a wee kiddo. Oh wait. We had a very old and large book of fairy tales that had the most gorgeous artwork in it, and the Sheherazade paintings were gorgeous; I was fascinated with the magic lamp! I wonder what happened to that book. Now, asking me what my favorite book was as I moved into my teens….that’s quite a different story indeed.
