Dr. Julian Ashworth

BASIC INFORMATION

Full Name: Dr. Julian Alexander Ashworth

Title: Field Operations Specialist, Order of the Scarab; Lecturer in Military History (on indefinite leave), Royal Military Academy Sandhurst

Age: 41

Date of Birth: March 21st

Place of Birth: London, England

Current Residence: A spare room in Miriam’s flat (he claims it’s “temporary”; it’s been eight months); also a flat in Kensington he never uses

Languages Spoken: English (native), Arabic, French, German, Italian, passable Ancient Egyptian (Miriam is teaching him; he’s terrible at it)

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Height: 6’2″ (188 cm)

Build: Athletic, broad-shouldered, lean—the body of a man who was once military and has stayed fit out of habit and necessity. Not bulky, but powerful. The kind of strength that doesn’t need to announce itself.

Hair: Dark blonde, almost brown, slightly longer on top. Always looks like he just ran his fingers through it. (He did. He always does.)

Eyes: Blue. Not pale, not grey—a deep, startling blue that Miriam refuses to compliment because she knows he’d insufferable about it.

Skin: Tanned from years in the field, with faint lines at the corners of his eyes from squinting into the sun (and from smiling more than he’d admit).

Distinguishing Features: A thin white scar through his left eyebrow (knife fight in Cairo, 2012; he won). A larger scar across his ribs (gunshot wound, protecting Miriam; he never mentioned it; she found it by accident; she hasn’t forgiven him). Calloused hands—not from excavation work, from weapons.

Typical Attire: Grey henley (always grey; he owns twelve identical ones), black tactical pants, worn leather boots. In the field: the same, plus a shoulder holster he tries to hide under his jacket (he doesn’t hide it well). In the archive: the same, because he’s always ready to fight.

Scent: Sandalwood and gunpowder. Leather. Coffee. Something warm and irritatingly attractive that Miriam will never name.

PERSONALITY

Core Traits:

  • Protective to a fault. Julian’s first instinct is to place himself between danger and the people he cares about. It’s not heroism—it’s compulsion. He has watched too many people die. He will not watch another.
  • Sharp wit, slow trust. He deflects with humor, often at his own expense. He laughs when he’s scared. He jokes when he’s grieving. Getting him to be serious is possible; getting him to be vulnerable is a war he rarely loses because he refuses to fight it.
  • Quietly brilliant. He downplays his intelligence—lets people assume he’s “just muscle.” But he has a first-class degree in military history, speaks four languages fluently, and can out-strategize anyone in the Order. He hides his mind behind his charm. It’s deliberate.
  • Emotionally guarded. Julian feels everything deeply—loss, fear, love—but he has spent decades learning not to show it. He is terrified of being a burden. He would rather bleed alone than ask for help.
  • Loyal beyond reason. Once Julian commits to someone, he does not leave. This has been exploited. It has broken him. He still will not change.
  • Devastatingly charming, and he knows it. Unlike Miriam, who uses her attractiveness as a weapon, Julian uses his as a shield. He smiles. He flirts. He makes people comfortable. And then he moves while they’re distracted. It’s not cruelty. It’s survival.

Quirks & Habits:

  • Runs his fingers through his hair when nervous or thinking. (He is almost always nervous or thinking.)
  • Cannot sit still in archives. He paces. He fiddles with pens. Miriam threatens to tie him to a chair. He dares her to try.
  • Drinks his coffee black (like Miriam) but makes it properly (unlike Miriam, whose coffee Julian describes as “a war crime”).
  • Whistles when he’s worried—usually old British folk songs his mother taught him. He doesn’t realize he’s doing it.
  • Keeps a photograph in his wallet. No one has seen it. Miriam has wanted to ask for two years. She hasn’t.
  • Sleeps with a knife under his pillow. Old habit. He won’t explain it.
  • Reads military history for pleasure. Yes, he’s aware that’s depressing. No, he doesn’t care.
  • Calls Miriam “Kessler” when he’s trying to be professional. Calls her “Miriam” when he’s scared. Has called her “love” exactly once. She thinks about it constantly.

BACKGROUND

Early Life (1983–2001):

Julian was born in London to a military family—father a colonel in the British Army, mother a nurse. He was the middle of three boys. His older brother, Thomas, died in the Gulf War when Julian was seventeen. His younger brother, Samuel, is a barrister in Manchester; they speak twice a year and both pretend that’s enough.

He attended Sandhurst at nineteen, commissioned into the Intelligence Corps. Served in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. His record is classified. He never talks about it.

The Incident (2009):

Something happened in Afghanistan. The official record says “friendly fire.” Julian’s nightmares say otherwise. He left the military in 2010—not dishonorably, but not cleanly. He was recruited by the Order of the Scarab the following year. They offered him a purpose that didn’t require him to carry a rifle for his country. They lied. He carries a rifle anyway.

Recruitment into the Order (2011):

The Order needed someone with Julian’s skills—combat training, intelligence analysis, emotional compartmentalization. They assigned him to field protection for their scholars. He was good at it. Too good. He started researching the cases himself, reading the papyri, asking questions.

He was promoted to Field Operations Specialist in 2015. By 2018, he had solved four cold cases on his own. The Order didn’t know whether to promote him or contain him. They did both.

Meeting Miriam Kessler (2022):

They met on a case involving a murdered Ptolemaic priest. Miriam was the lead scholar. Julian was assigned as her protection. She hated him immediately—too charming, too handsome, too present. He found her furious and brilliant and beautiful in a way that made his chest hurt.

They solved the case. She almost died. He saved her life. She told him not to do it again. He told her to stop almost dying.

They’ve been arguing ever since.

The Saqqara Case (2024):

Julian killed a man for the first time in front of Miriam. The assassin from the Lotus Ascendancy—the one who had murdered Emile Bouchard—raised his blade, and Julian fired without hesitation. He saved her life. He also showed her what he really was.

She didn’t flinch.

He hasn’t slept properly since.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Strengths:

  • Tactical genius (can assess a threat and neutralize it in seconds)
  • Emotional endurance (has survived things that would break most people)
  • Deeply empathetic (hides it, but feels everything)
  • Physically formidable (hand-to-hand combat, firearms, strategy)
  • Fiercely protective (will die for the people he loves; has almost done so twice)

Weaknesses:

  • Survivor’s guilt (Thomas. Afghanistan. Everyone he couldn’t save)
  • Difficulty asking for help (would rather bleed out than be a burden)
  • Deflects vulnerability with humor (people think he’s shallow; he lets them)
  • Insomnia (nightmares; wakes up reaching for a weapon)
  • Obsessive about Miriam’s safety (it’s not healthy; he knows; he can’t stop)

Fears:

  • Losing Miriam
  • Being unable to protect someone again
  • His past catching up with him
  • Being seen as a monster (he has done monstrous things; he knows)

Internal Conflicts:

  • He left the military because he was tired of violence. He joined the Order and became more violent than ever.
  • He wants to be soft with Miriam. He has forgotten how.
  • He believes in justice but has committed acts that look like vengeance.
  • He loves her. He cannot say it. He shows it instead—badly, imperfectly, constantly.

RELATIONSHIPS

Dr. Miriam Kessler (Partner, Protectee, Reason He Keeps Going):

“She’s the most brilliant, infuriating, beautiful woman I’ve ever met. She smokes too much, sleeps too little, and she looks at me like she can see straight through every lie I’ve ever told. I’m not afraid of much. I’m afraid of losing her.”

Julian loves Miriam the way a soldier loves peace—desperately, hopelessly, with the full knowledge that he may never have it. He has never told her. He shows her instead: making her coffee, standing too close, killing men who threaten her. It is not enough. He knows. He does not know how to give more.

Emile Bouchard (Mentor, Deceased):

“Emile was the first person in the Order who looked at me like I was more than a weapon. He asked about my reading. He asked about my brother. He asked about my nightmares. I didn’t answer. I wish I had.”

Emile’s death broke something in Julian too—not the same way it broke Miriam, but deeply. Julian blames himself. He was supposed to protect the excavation house. He was with Miriam instead. He will carry that guilt until he dies.

The Order of the Scarab (Employer, Increasingly Distrusted):

“They saved me. Then they used me. Now I’m not sure there’s a difference.”

Julian’s loyalty to the Order is conditional. He stays because Miriam stays. If she left, he would burn the institution to the ground and walk through the ashes holding her hand.

The Lotus Ascendancy (Enemy):

“They think they’re liberators. They’re just another kind of tyrant. I’ve killed tyrants before. I’ll kill them too.”

Julian has no mercy for the Lotus Ascendancy. They murdered Emile. They tried to murder Miriam. He will end them—not for justice, but for her.

Samuel Ashworth (Younger Brother):

“Sam is a good man. A barrister. Married. Two kids. He doesn’t know what I do. He thinks I’m a military historian on sabbatical. I let him think that. It’s kinder.”

Julian loves his brother. He cannot tell him the truth. The distance between them is Julian’s choice and Julian’s penance.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Combat & Tactical:

  • Expert marksman (handguns, rifles; prefers a Sig Sauer P320)
  • Hand-to-hand combat (Krav Maga, military combatives)
  • Strategic planning (can read a room, a battlefield, or a conspiracy)
  • Surveillance and counter-surveillance
  • Evasion and extraction

Academic:

  • Military history (specialty: ancient warfare, logistics)
  • Can read maps like poetry
  • Fluent in four languages (working on Ancient Egyptian; Miriam laughs at his accent)
  • Surprisingly good at archival research (he reads cases like battle plans)

Other:

  • Calm under pressure (hasn’t panicked since 2009; is due)
  • Excellent at making coffee
  • Can hotwire a car (has done so twice; both times for Miriam)
  • Terrible at admitting he’s wrong (gets it from his father)

EQUIPMENT & TOOLS

Always Carried:

  • Sig Sauer P320 (concealed, always loaded)
  • Pocket knife (matching set with Miriam; he gave her his; he carries hers)
  • Zippo lighter (engraved with his unit insignia; doesn’t smoke; uses it to fidget)
  • Wallet (contains photograph; no one has seen it)
  • Phone (encrypted; Order-issued; he hates it)

In the Field:

  • Shoulder holster (concealed under jacket)
  • Tactical flashlight
  • Field first-aid kit (he’s saved Miriam’s life twice with it)
  • Compact binoculars
  • Backup firearm (ankle holster; old habit)

At Home:

  • Too many books on military history
  • A single cast-iron pan (he cooks; Miriam burns water)
  • A photograph of Thomas (faded, creased, never framed)
  • Miriam’s coffee mug (she left it in his room; he hasn’t returned it)

QUOTES

“I’m not the muscle. I’m the strategy. The muscle is just a bonus.”

“Kessler, you’re going to get yourself killed. Again. Please stop. I’m running out of dramatic rescues.”

“I don’t believe in fate. I believe in preparation. And I prepared for someone like her. I just didn’t expect her to be real.”

“The Lotus Ascendancy wants secrets? I’ll give them a secret: I’m better at killing than they are. And I have less to lose.”

“Emile asked me once if I thought the dead could rest. I said I didn’t know. He said, ‘Then make sure they can.’ I’ve been trying ever since.”

“Miriam says I’m ’emotionally unavailable.’ I’m not unavailable. I’m just… under new management.”

“I’ve killed men. I’ve saved lives. I’ve done things I can’t take back. But when she looks at me—really looks—I feel like I could be forgiven. I don’t believe in forgiveness. But I believe in her.”

CHARACTER ARC (Spoilers for future cases)

Case No. 1 (The Architect’s Silence): Julian reveals his past to Miriam (partially). He kills an assassin to save her. He loses Emile. He begins to realize that protecting Miriam is not the same as loving her—and that he wants both.

Future Cases (Teased): Julian’s past will catch up with him. His brother will learn the truth. He will be forced to choose between the Order and Miriam—and he will choose her. Every time.

FINAL NOTE

“I am not a good man. I am not a kind man. But I am her man. And that is the only thing I need to be.”

— Dr. Julian Ashworth
