A Reflection on Humanity, Eternity, and Purpose
I woke up with dirt beneath my fingernails and stars in my lungs.
The dirt did not concern me. Men have always belonged to the earth. We build our kingdoms from it, shape our gods from it, and eventually return to it. The soil beneath my nails felt familiar, as though some ancient part of me had spent the night digging through forgotten centuries.
The stars were another matter entirely.
Every breath carried the taste of eternity. Not the eternity promised by priests or carved into the walls of tombs, but the kind that exists before names are given to things. The kind that watched the first river carve its path through stone and witnessed the first dream rise from a sleeping mind.
I stood beneath the morning sky and wondered what strange bargain had been made while I slept.
Had I wandered beyond the horizon where Ra guides his solar barque through the unseen hours? Had I crossed paths with the dead and returned carrying fragments of their heavens within me? Or had I simply spent too long searching for meaning among distant lights while forgetting that my feet still stood upon the earth?
Perhaps that is the burden of being human.
We are creatures of dust who spend our lives reaching for stars. One hand forever buried in the soil of our responsibilities, our histories, our failures. The other stretched toward something infinite, something just beyond our grasp.
This morning, I woke carrying both.
And for the first time, I am not certain whether that is a curse or a blessing.
What do you think it means to wake with the earth in your hands and the cosmos in your chest?

To wake with the earth in your hands and the cosmos in your chest feels like the essence of humanity itself. We are rooted in mortality yet haunted by eternity. One part of us remembers where we came from, while another part keeps searching for what lies beyond the horizon. Perhaps the miracle is not that we carry both, but that we are able to survive the weight of them.
The current path I’m walking feels like this, most days. But also like Cozyscribe said, “perhaps the miracle is not that we carry both, but that we are able to survive the weight of them.”
optimism is key. The goal in life is to overcome and evolve.
